Carmilla! What? Really? How? Why?

Carmilla What? Really? How? Why? These questions were posed to me by my wife after I had explained to her why I had texted to her "I love you. I miss us."  We will call my wife L from here on out. She was quite confused, she couldn't understand how something like Carmilla had brought about that statement. So I first had to explain what was Carmilla?  How it had appealed to me? Then she wanted to know how I had found it?  Finally.  Why had this show awakened me to all the trouble our relationship had?

Let's be honest here I am not the intended audience for Carmilla at all, not in the least.(I made this statement only seeing the first season and I couldn’t have been more wrong it’s for everyone and it should appeal to everyone) It a show about college, growing up, and finding love with someone you weren't expecting to.  Plus all the supernatural stuff. In a show set up like a play, all the dialog happens in one place and the main action happens off-screen.  The show is based on a novel by the same name set in the late 1800s even before Dracula was a thing, a book way before its time.

So, really? The same question my wife asked me when I told her about my sudden change.  There was definitely a large amount of confusion.  I can see why a 35-year-old married father of three watching a series about a lesbian vampire relationship set in college is a little strange. I can see her point.  So, really? Yes, really it's a great love story that reminds me of our love story I told her.

How? How did I find Carmilla? To quote Bill Murry  "Call it … fatecall it luck, call it karma, I believe everything happens for a reason." I was bored one night recently going through my youtube feed.  Most of my youtube feed is filled with soccer highlights and film score music. So I'm slowly going through my feed and I was about to head to bed when I saw it Carmilla.

Why did I watch it?  For starters, I have read the original book back in high school.  My English teacher thought it would be enlightening for her students.  So I was a little curious what a modern interpretation of the story would be like. For some reason, it showed up.  For some reason, I was meant to see this.  So I clicked on the link and the first episode began to play.

Laura Eileen Hollis

Laura Eileen Hollis (played by  Elise Bauman ) is one of our two protagonists.  Laura is young, sheltered, naive, and headstrong.  When we were first introduced to Laura I instantly identified with her. ( Carmilla and Laura Parallels )  Things quickly change with the introduction of Carmilla.  This entry isn't about me or Carmilla.  It's really about Laura and L.  What makes them similar and what makes them different.  Laura does have a few similarities lets just say Laura and I love the sweets.  I will bring them up some of them at the appropriate moment.      Let's start with the differences.  Though they have a ton in common there are a few differences. Now it is no secret that Laura is naive and I could say the same thing about L.  The two both grew up in small towns and were out on their own for the first time.  How they were naive is where the differences lie....

Its a Trap! Kind of.

Though episodes 11 to 16 are very important, essentially showing Carmilla trying to save Laura from her mother first by just telling her mother to find someone else's besides Laura.  Then Carmilla tries to scare away her mother with the charm bracelet to protect Laura from other vampires all while Laura finds evidence linking Carmilla to all the disappearances devising a plan to catch Carmilla.  These episodes move the plot along but don't really relate to me and L until the trap.           It's a trap,  Episode 17.   It's a Trap was an instant flashback to a moment between L and me.  So when Carmilla walks in and doesn't want to go to the party and would rather have one on one time that's totally me....

Why wont you change?

Asking someone to change is a big ask.  Especially when you have only known the person for like a couple of months.  That is exactly what Laura is asking a 300-year-old vampire to do.  Asking someone to change overnight is an impossible task.  Change takes time and there has to be a want to change.  Now that Carmilla has gone from the evil side to the good side she has struggled with this new identity.  Laura really doesn't understand this yet and just expects Carmilla to be who she was at the end of season one and that isn't who Carmilla is at the moment.                Laura  " So … yeah.  I think …. Carm and I just … broke up.  And … Was I not supposed to want her to be better?  Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?  I mean, it - it’s supposed to go … you love someone and - I’m not even saying that I loved her because we were only together for, like, a...
